How to use

  1. Choose whether you are starting from a net amount (add VAT) or a gross amount (remove VAT).
  2. Enter the amount and the VAT rate. Type any rate, or tap one of the common rates.
  3. Read the net, VAT and gross figures. They update as you type.

About this tool

Adding VAT: VAT = net × rate ÷ 100, and gross = net + VAT. Removing VAT from a gross figure uses division, not subtraction: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), and VAT = gross − net. Subtracting the percentage from the gross is a common mistake that under-states the net.

The rate is a free input because VAT and sales-tax rates differ by country, by product category and over time. Check the current rate that applies to your goods or services with the relevant tax authority. This tool does the arithmetic only; it is not tax advice.

FAQ

Why does removing 20% VAT from 120 give 100 and not 96?

Because the VAT was added on top of the net amount. 100 plus 20% is 120, so to get back you divide 120 by 1.20. Taking 20% off 120 would give 96, which is wrong.

Can I use this for sales tax or GST?

Yes. The math is identical for any tax that is a percentage added to a net price. Enter the rate that applies to you.

How are the results rounded?

Figures are shown to two decimal places using standard rounding. For invoices, follow your local rules on rounding each line versus the total.
