About this tool
Every quantity is multiplied by the same factor: servings you want divided by original servings. Whole numbers, decimals, simple fractions (3/4) and mixed numbers (1 1/2) are all recognized, and ranges like "2-3" are scaled at both ends. Lines without a leading number, such as "salt to taste", are left as they are.
Fractions are rounded to the nearest common kitchen measure (halves, thirds, quarters and eighths). Scaling works well for most dishes, but baking recipes can behave differently at large multiples, and cooking times do not scale in a straight line. Treat the output as a starting point and taste as you go.
FAQ
Can I scale a recipe down as well as up?
Yes. Enter a smaller target than the original and every amount is reduced by the same factor. Very small amounts are shown as decimals when no simple fraction fits.
Why did a line not change?
The tool only scales lines that begin with a number, a fraction or a mixed number. "A pinch of salt" or "zest of 1 lemon" keeps its wording, because the number is not at the start.
Do cooking times and temperatures scale too?
No. Oven temperatures stay the same, and cooking time depends on pan size and depth rather than on the quantity alone. Check for doneness a little earlier or later than the original recipe suggests.
